The DNA Park Revitalization Committee worked especially hard to develop a Durand Park Revitalization Proposal and presentation to City staff. They had several meetings with City staff and I am very pleased to say that, as a result of their diligence, the Durand Park is on the Capital Budget forecast! The new playground equipment will be installed this coming Spring, 2009. In 2013, money will be designated to design a Master Plan for the park's revitalization. Construction is scheduled to commence in 2015. Many thanks to our Park Revitalization Committee, Ward Councillor Bob Bratina, and our dedicated City staff, especially Rob Norman, Lawrence Stasiuk and Al Dore.

The latest update about St. Mark's: it's ours to keep! City staff prepared a report with many options about the future use of the heritage building and open space, which has been used as a neighbourhood park for many, many years. This report was discussed and debated at a meeting of the Ecomonic Development and Planning Committee on October 21st. In the end, Council ratified the Committee's motion to take the property off of the market, retain the green space as a neighbourhood parkette, and try to find money in the City's 2009 budget to make some moderate changes to the heritage-designated structure.

The City of Hamilton Economic Development and Planning Committee received a report outling the costs related to the retention and maintenance of the St. Mark's Church site located at 130 Hunter Street at Bay. This building received heritage designation in 1995 and the open green space has been utilized as a neighbourhood park. Until June 2008, the City was intent on selling the site. This changed in the face of the protest from the DNA and residents alike. This latest report outlines various options for the continued use of the space. The report will be discussed at the Economic Development and Planning Committee meeting on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at 9:30 a.m. at the Albion Room in the Hamilton Convention Centre. If you are unable to attend this meeting, please read the report and let the DNA know what you think by emailing president@durandna.com.
